Responsibilities

I currently work in the Research and Development department for Avolites Limited, who design and manufacture control solutions for all aspects of the of the professional lighting industry.
I was initially recruited to design the pcbs required for the new ART 4000 dimmer range.
With this in mind the ART2000 range was created, with the design brief of being "easy to configure for different requirements from a range of standard components". ART2000 is available in 2 or 4 module frame sizes, each module handling up to 240 Amperes of power. Five module types are available ranging from 32Amp dimmer channels to 16Amp contactor channels and modules specifically designed for the 110 Volt markets. All Art 2000 systems have options for moving light mains distribution and virtually every power and multipin connector is supported

My main responsibility is that of maintaining the CAD department.
This can be broken down into the following categories :-

bullet

Generating circuit diagrams and designing printed circuit boards.

bulletCreating a bill of materials for our stock control system.
bulletProducing metalwork, assembly and appearance  drawings.
bulletMaintaining all CAD libraries
bulletProvide full documentation of all CAD work :- issuing circuit diagrams, pcb assembly and wiring drawings.
bulletDesigning screen printing for metalwork, overlays and stickers.

Technical Skills

bulletPowerLogic V4.0 is used for Design Entry.
PowerLogic is a robust, multi-sheet, schematic capture solution. It offers instant access to every sheet in the design, on-line parts editing and library management facilities, and rapid navigational aids.

bulletPowerPCB 4.0 is used is then used to design our printed circuit boards.
PowerPCB is the ultimate design environment for complex, high-speed printed circuit boards. It is a powerful shape-based, rules-driven design layout solution, which allows for automatic and interactive routing.
PowerPCB also has keepouts and cutouts functionality allowing you to define mechanical keepout areas to ensure correct fit of the PCB with the hardware enclosure. Also within PowerPCB, lock/protect traces functionality allows you to lock and protect trace routes, partial routes, and un-routes.
PowerPCB is provided with CAM utilities to output Drill data, Gerber, and other standard data exchange formats.

bulletGerberview II - The Gerber Plot File Viewer is an application which allows you to view Gerber plots and NC Drill files. This version is particularly useful because it provides support for the extended Gerber (RS-274X) file format which removes the need for messy and confusing aperture tables.

bullet Adobe Acrobat Writer 4.0 is used to create pdf files to provide all the necessary documentation for our manuals or website.

bulletA Bill of Materials is then inputted into our Caps Stock Control System, which is used by our buying, production and sales department.

bullet
Occasionally the need arises to modify older legacy designs. Most of these have been designed using Cadstar V4.0, which is a schematic capture and pcb design program.

bullet

AutoCAD 2000 is used to design the metalwork for all our products. It is also used to create assembly, wiring and appearance drawings for our manuals, website and production department.

bullet

CorelDRAW 8.0 is the graphics tool used to design screen printing for metalwork, overlays and stickers.

bullet

Designing and maintaining the avolites.com website.
This is achieved using Frontpage 2000 for web publishing and PhotoDraw V2 for creating and editing pictures for the web.

bullet

Creating the discussion forum at avolites.co.uk

bullet

Building proto-type circuits on vero-board for evaluation purposes.

bullet

Testing and fault finding circuit boards to component level.

bullet

Using In System Programming (ISP) tools to program various GAL and ISP devices.

 Responsibilities

Worked in the R&D department and was responsible for the generation and modification of circuit diagrams and pcb layouts. I also maintained the various CAD libraries by adding, modifying and documenting all new symbols.
I was also responsible for training various staff members to use the CAD packages.

Technical Skills

bullet

ORCAD STD III was used to generate all the circuit diagrams.

bullet

VUTRAX was initially used to manually layout the circuit boards. As this method was prone to error, it was greatly improved by modifying all our CAD  library symbols so that it was then possible for an ORCAD schematic to produce a netlist which was then used by VUTRAX to generate a rats nest.
This was then used to design the pcb which VUTRAX could then thoroughly check for true connectivity and clearance.
This process was further improved by using VUTRAX to generate both the schematic as well as the pcb layouts.
VUTRAX was more than just a PCB design tool - it was also capable of producing very accurate mechanical designs.

bullet

CorelDRAW V6 was used to create the silkscreen for all metalwork.

Responsibilities

Avolites were formed in 1975 by several members of a touring road crew who decided to make better dimmers than those with which they were touring, which seemed to need constant mechanical repair. The dimming range they designed and manufactured became known as the "Avolites FD dimmer".
The subsequent success of the FD Dimmer placed it as 'the industry standard touring dimmer'.

Responsible for designing circuit boards for our analogue as well as digital consoles.
The QM500 series analogue console had computer memory and a very rapid flash button response time. No easy task with the processors available then!

Also designed boards for our range of Dimmers.
Special care had to be taken over these pcbs as they contained very high voltages.

Responsibilities

This was my very first full-time job since completing my HND course in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bristol Polytechnic.
Initially, I applied for the position of Test Engineer. However, once I arrived for the interview I was given an instruction manual for a CAD workstation and asked to design a simple pcb.
A few hours later I completed the task and was offer the position of PCB designer.
The CAD workstation used was one by Wayne Kerr Datum Systems.
Within a couple of months I was designing a very large motherboard based around a Motorola 68010 micro-processor.
I also designed boards for the Ministry Of Defence.
